Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their
heritage, community and history. It is England’s largest festival of history and culture. This
year, the ‘Friends’ excelled themselves by holding two Heritage Open Days! On both days
we attracted more than two dozen visitors, some of them seeking the final resting place of
family and friends, aided by our Records Officer, Joy May.
The highlight of each day was the guided tour, led by Sandra Moore, in the guise of
schoolteacher, Elizabeth Goodwin, telling visitors about some of the more colourful
‘residents’ at rest in our cemetery. One of the walks even included an impromptu rendition of negro spiritual, ‘Poor Old Joe’!
The heavens were kind to us, keeping the rain away; and the generous donations will help
us to continue our work to preserve and protect our lovely plot for the enjoyment of future
generations.
